Understanding Mercy

We have been studying God’s word in Matthew chapter 5 which is also called the Beatitudes. They are eight blessings by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. We have looked at several of them so far.

In today’s message we will look at verse 7. Jesus pronounces those as being ‘blessed’, which are those who are contented, those who are satisfied, and those who are truly happy as the merciful people because they will recieve mercy.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Matthew 5:7, New International Version (NIV)

When you read this at first glance, many people take this to mean that “Be kind and nice to others, and they will be kind and nice to you.” But this is not always true, is it? It does not match the reality of life.

So what exactly does Jesus mean? What is He saying to us? Think about these questions as we continue our study of the Sermon on the Mount.
